Frequently ask questions

Treatment & Conditions

Do I need a referral from my GP?
No. Chiropractors are primary healthcare professionals, so you don’t need a referral from your GP or another healthcare provider before booking an appointment. If, during your assessment, we believe you would benefit from further investigations or another type of healthcare, we’ll discuss this with you and refer you to the most appropriate professional where necessary.
Is chiropractic care right for me?

Your first appointment is designed to answer exactly that question.

We’ll take the time to understand your symptoms, medical history, lifestyle and overall health before carrying out a thorough examination. This allows us to determine whether chiropractic care is appropriate for your condition and recommend the most suitable treatment plan.

If we don’t believe chiropractic is the right approach, we’ll explain why and help point you towards the most appropriate care.

What conditions can chiropractic help with?

Many people visit us for back pain, neck pain, headaches, hip pain, shoulder pain and sciatica, but chiropractic care may also help with conditions including trapped nerves, joint pain, sports injuries, postural problems and other musculoskeletal conditions.

Every patient is different, so your chiropractor will assess your symptoms before recommending whether chiropractic care is suitable for you.

Can chiropractic help with headaches and migraines?

Some headaches, particularly those that originate from the neck, may respond well to chiropractic care. By improving movement within the cervical spine and reducing muscle tension, many patients experience a reduction in the frequency or severity of their symptoms.

During your consultation, we’ll determine whether your headaches may be linked to your neck and whether chiropractic treatment is appropriate.

Can chiropractic help with sciatica?

Yes. Sciatica is commonly caused by irritation or compression of the sciatic nerve. Chiropractic care aims to improve spinal movement, reduce pressure on affected structures and help relieve symptoms such as pain, tingling and numbness in the leg.

Can chiropractic help improve my posture?

Yes. Poor posture often places additional strain on the spine, muscles and joints. Chiropractic care, combined with advice on movement, workstation setup and simple exercises, can help improve posture and reduce the discomfort associated with prolonged sitting or repetitive activities.

Can chiropractic help with sports injuries?

Yes. Whether you’ve sustained an injury through running, cycling, golf, rugby or the gym, chiropractic care can help restore movement, improve function and support your recovery while helping reduce the risk of future injuries.

What to Expect / Safety

What happens during my first appointment?

Your initial consultation is a one-hour appointment, split into two 30-minute sessions.

During the first 30 minutes, your chiropractor will take a thorough medical history and carry out a detailed physical examination. If clinically required, X-rays may also be taken. In some cases, where your chiropractor feels it is appropriate, treatment may begin during this first appointment for an additional charge.

The second 30-minute appointment is your detailed report of findings. Your chiropractor will talk you through the results of your assessment, explain what may be causing your symptoms, answer any questions and recommend a personalised treatment plan. Your treatment will usually begin during this appointment.

Will I need X-rays?

Not always.

X-rays are only recommended when they’re clinically justified and will help us make a more accurate diagnosis or ensure treatment is appropriate.

Many patients never require X-rays, while others may benefit from them depending on their symptoms and examination findings.

Are chiropractic adjustments painful?

Most patients find chiropractic adjustments comfortable and often experience immediate improvements in movement. Some people experience mild soreness following their first treatment, similar to how muscles can feel after exercise, but this usually settles within a day or two.

Is chiropractic treatment safe?

Yes. Chiropractic is a regulated healthcare profession, and treatment is considered very safe when carried out by a qualified chiropractor.

Before beginning any treatment, we’ll complete a thorough assessment to ensure chiropractic care is appropriate for your condition.

Why do joints sometimes make a popping sound?

The popping sound that sometimes occurs during an adjustment is simply the release of gas from within the joint. It’s completely normal, harmless and isn’t the sound of bones cracking.

Are there chiropractic techniques for sports injuries?

Yes. Athletes benefit from customized adjustments that promote faster recovery, improve flexibility, and reduce the chance of repeat injuries.

Appointments / Payments / Insurance

How long will it take to get better?

Recovery varies from person to person and depends on factors such as how long you’ve had your symptoms, the severity of your condition, your overall health and how your body responds to treatment.

We’ll discuss what you can realistically expect after your assessment and keep your progress under regular review.

How many appointments will I need?

There’s no one-size-fits-all answer.

Your chiropractor will explain your recommended treatment plan after your assessment, based on your diagnosis, goals and examination findings. As your symptoms improve, we’ll regularly reassess your progress and adjust your care accordingly.

How long are appointments?

Your first consultation typically lasts between 45 and 60 minutes, allowing plenty of time for assessment, diagnosis and discussion. Follow-up appointments are usually 10 to 20 minutes, depending on your treatment plan.

Do you accept private health insurance?
Many private health insurance providers include chiropractic care within their policies. If you’re unsure whether you’re covered, please contact us before your appointment and we’ll be happy to advise.
What payment methods do you accept?

We accept most major debit and credit cards, as well as cash. If you have any questions regarding payment, our reception team will be happy to help.

Other Common Questions

Can I receive chiropractic care alongside physiotherapy or massage?

Yes. Chiropractic care often works well alongside other healthcare treatments. If you’re currently receiving physiotherapy, massage therapy or another form of treatment, please let your chiropractor know so we can ensure your care is coordinated appropriately.

What can I do between appointments?

We’ll often recommend exercises, stretches and practical lifestyle advice to help support your recovery. Following these recommendations can improve your progress and help reduce the risk of your symptoms returning.

Are there any side effects after treatment?

Some patients experience mild soreness or stiffness following treatment, particularly after their first appointment. This is usually temporary and settles within 24 to 48 hours.

What if chiropractic isn't the right treatment for me?

Your health always comes first.

If, after your assessment, we don’t believe chiropractic care is appropriate, we’ll explain why and, where necessary, recommend that you see another healthcare professional or arrange further investigations.

What happens if chiropractic care doesn’t help my condition?

If your condition does not improve, we’ll refer you to another trusted healthcare provider. Your health is our top priority, and we’ll ensure you get the right care.
